Wiccans....a couple of questions about deities?
Think of specific names from specific cultures such as Isis and Osiris or Zeus and Hera, as "masks" or "personas" for the Lord and Lady, which are the Concepts. One writer interestingly suggested that the Goddess is all NOUN and the God all Verb or Action within the Noun. Basically it is an international or global model of a Mother godess and her consort/Son who is the male god within Her as She is All Things. There are infinite variations as to flavouring and colouring these deities, but that is the higher concept behind all the masks. Genericaly speaking she is like Bountiful Nature and her son is the male active principle within Her: the "leaper in the corn". All goddesses are one great goddess, which is explained very well in "The Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets " by Barbara G. Walker. Later male-dominated patriarchal religions such as the Zeus cult altered the myths to make goddesses such as Aphrodirte and Hera appear as "rivals" but there was not an earlier rivalry among different faces of the One Great Goddess of Old.
