Will I lose my contacts if I restore my iPhone?

I have an iPhone 4 and have never synced with iTunes before and when I tried to sync for the first time a bit ago it told me I had to restore. Now I don't know if I'll lose my contacts when I restore or if iTunes will backup my contacts before the restore. Anyone know? Maybe I should just jailbreak it?
