Why does it matter if we recognize the truth or not?

Beyond things that are directly evident to the senses, why does it matter (either to humans or deities, I suppose) whether we recognize the truth, be it whether God exists or not, whether Mary was a perpetual virgin, etc. If my beliefs are wrong, but I do not act on them (such as war against nonbelievers), why should this bother anyone?
